about

Ride the Sky-originally recorded 1970 by Germany's Lucifer's Friend. Another A-list Proto-Metal gem, overlooked over the last 1/2 century. Easily as influential on the of Heavy Metal genre's as Sabbath/Priest/Purple etc.
Lucifer's Friend, fronted by the powerhouse Brit singer, John Lawton (1949-2021)
Lawton, left the UK in 1969, then joined German Bubblegum Pop/Schlager vocal group 'The Les Humphries Singers'. Making tons of LPs, Singles & appearing many European TV shows, including the 1976 Eurovision song contest! Simultaneously fronting underground legends Lucifer's Freind. In 1976 Lawton left LF to become lead vocalist of UK's Uriah Heep, replacing David Byron. Heep already had big arena success worldwide, John stayed with the Heep until 1979.
After Heep, John even hosted his own TV travel series for Bulgarian Television in the mid 2000s!

This song is another Sister Midnight "Bucket List" cover tune, that has been sitting in the SM vault for several years now...Until recently. Recruiting the epic voice of Derek Christensen (Sonic Medusa/Angus Khan/B Movie Rats) To take it over the top. You've heard Derek's vocals on several other Sister Midnight recordings like:

1-'New Years Evil 80' Soundtrack-

2-'Night of the Vampire' -Roky Erickson-

In summary: This song just rips...Another one of those "Why didn't these guys do more songs like this?" questions in Heavy Rock history. They had a few that came close, but steadily moved more in the Melodic/Prog Rock/Pop direction in the following albums. Nothing equaling the sheer Chunk-Rock, Organ-drenched energy of 'Ride The Sky'...And no other Metal band has made better use of a French Horn to date!

lyrics

Traveling this dark world, leaving light behind
Seeing things I shouldn't see
New eyes I got to find
Mars, Venus and stars shaking
Their heads at me
No more todays, tonight I'll be riding the sky
Hey world look out I'm coming
Friends pass me by and you saw me humming
Mars, Venus and stars shaking
Their heads at me
No more todays, tonight I'll be riding the sky
Tonight ride the sky, tonight ride the sky
The smile on his face turn me to stone
The words that he spoke
Wouldn't leave me alone
Mars, Venus and stars
Shaking their heads at me
No more todays tonight I'll be riding the sky
Tonight ride the sky, tonight ride the sky,
Tonight ride the sky
Tonight ride the sky
